PROJECT ONION
THE onionsat STORY
The first satellite of our team was a 3 deciliter-sized can sized CanSat satellite, which we made for the 2024 national CanSat competition.
CanSat, aka constant learning.
Building a satellite is cool, but it’s not just for geeks. The main target group of the competition is students interested in STEM, yet every help is needed! Even without prior technical experience, we managed to build a satellite. From soldering to marketing and other soft skills, these skills can be developed during the competition, skills that are also essential in competitive market projects.
At the competition
Our team was selected among the top ten, so our CanSat was launched into the sky by the BME Suborbitals’ rockets, named Athena. Our satellite reached an altitude of 1 kilometer, successfully completing the mission. At the competition, our team’s project won a special technology award.

About the competition
Building a space device is multifaceted but at the same time an exciting mission. We built our first satellite for the 2024 CanSat competition organized by Hungarian Astonautical Society. A versenyen a legjobb 10 pályamunkát benyújtó csapat (köztük csapatunk) műholdját a BME Suborbitals rakétaépítő csapat rakétáival fel is bocsátották körülbelül másfél kilóméter magasságba The satellite of 10 teams (including our team) with the best project submissions
Our satellite
During the development of our CanSat, we focused primarily on durability. We managed to build a satellite that far exceeded the original safety and durability requirements. Our satellite can be used in meteorological applications, as it is also capable of studying jet streams.
